‘Props’ for the WhistleBump site (sort of)

Somehow the new WhistleBump site has been featured on Design Shack, who “offer regular examples of great CSS, standards based design to help inspire and create”. We’re immensely pleased to announce that the Lylo design scored a stunningly average 5 :-)

WhistleBump Redesign

I haven’t been particularly kind to the WhistleBump site over the past few years. It was aways hurriedly knocked together at the eleventh hour and has suffered slightly as a result. Rather frayed around the edges, it was (in my eyes at least) the online equivalent of an amateur DIY botch job (sorry Simon).

Good news, then, that the recent WhistleBump redesign was completed from concept to delivery in a little under five days :)

Self-deprecating jokes aside, the redesign was well planned and executed. After the screen mock-ups were approved, the site content was written using XHTML 1.1 and the presentation in CSS. Purists would undoubtably comment on the implementation of the prevalent rounded boxes, and I agree that there are methods which produce slightly less HTML, but given the time contraints which were imposed, we decided to go with our tried and trusted method of providing fluid rounded boxes. I think they work well.

The original brief was to produce a fittingly “disco” look for one of London’s best-loved club nights, and the feedback has been very positive. Perhaps the biggest complaint was for the choice of white text on black background, an allegedly frowned upon design no-no. Personal taste I guess, but it works for me and for the client, so I’m happy.

And what are rules there for if not to be broken?
